Alumni & Friends : Alumni News

As part of our 150th celebration we asked alumni to share their "Treasured Memories" of Holy Angels.

We want to thank all of you who took the time to keep these memories alive. We will continue to post more memories as we recieve them.

Memories of Holy Angels… 1975 – 1983

  • My teachers:1 st grade – Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Wagner, 2 nd – Mrs. Lauber and Mrs. Bunnell, 3 rd – Ms. Keller (now Market), 4 th – Ms. Prueter and Ms. Hertel, 5 th Mrs. Tenney and Mrs. Schlagetter, 6 th – Sr. Loretta Joseph and Mrs. K…? (I can see her in my head), 7 th – Mr. Unrast and Ms. Francis, and 8 th – Mr. O’Leary and Ms. Hertel (again …I think)
  • Dr. Beverly Ann was the First Kindergarten teacher (my brother Mark was in her first class)
  • Principal was Sr. Rose Elizabeth
  • 1 st grade classroom (Mrs. Frantz) was “out in the annex” for several years. (the annex was a building out by the metal stairs that went up to the alley.)
  • I remember “clapping” erasers between the school and church.
  • Younger years – only served sandwich/ pizza and we ate in our rooms. They’d “cook them in what is now the office inside the gym. (Milk was delivered to our rooms in a milk crate.)
  • There was a playground between the Priests’ house and Sarvers Music. It had a merry-go-round, a tall slide, swings, “springy” toys (which you sat on and rocked back and forth) and monkey bars (we played “war” on these).
  • Later years – We had full meals and we ate in the sym. (Tables had to be put up and taken down practically every day.) … and they still cooked them from the gym’s office.
  • Older kids got to go to the parking lot for gym. I remember playing kickball on the “big field” (favorite) … or the “little field” if we were too slow to get out there.
  • Spending recesses making up cheers on the playground.
  • I remember getting to fill in for the secretary during her breaks/lunch. She had beautiful blonde hair … Mrs. Collier (who plays music for weekend masses) reminds me of the lady who was our secretary.
  • Only the girls wore uniforms… and the only choice was plaid!! (Younger girls had jumpers and older girls had the plaid skirts.)
  • Before Christmas bread, the whole school would watch a movie in the gym.
  • I remember losing some of our students… Billy Roberts (from my grade) and Ronda Reier and a Tommy Partington from other grades. (They have not been forgotten.).
  • I LOVED Fr. Trick’s religion class!! (The carpet/padding had to be 2 inches thick!!)
  • We went to church two times during the school week – one or two grades on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday and the whole school on Friday.
  • I remember Ms. Bunnell leading singing practice on Thursday afternoons in church.
  • I remember different grades taking turns to sing at funeral services during the week.
  • Holy Angels church – I remember tile floors, colorful statues and beautiful paintings on the walls and ceiling.

Many good memories were had at Holy Angels!! …thanks to all who make it possible!!

We graduated in 1960 and were the first class to complete the last 6 years at the new high school. We were all very proud of being first. Mrs. Quinlisk was a cafeteria cook and made the best Johnny Marzetti ever. First Fridays were a treat because we got to order fresh rolls for our breakfast after taking communion. There was a year at the High School that for May Crowning we stood outside in the snow. Quite unusual for May. In grade school we had our art class in the house across from the school on Water Street. Monsignor Lehman was such a great presence in all of our lives as we were going through school. I am sure there was an element of fear in our hearts besides the respect that we had for him. The Sister that taught us in the second grade told us that whatever we wished for the day that we made our First Communion we would receive if God felt it was good for us. We could not ride the bus to the high school unless we attended Mass in the mornings. It was a long walk to school some days. We had a lot of good memories of grade and high school. What good long lasting friendships were made during those years and still remain today.

My memories are wonderful – the humor, the beauty, the happiness and sometimes the sadness of growing up in a Catholic school in the 50’s.

The aroma of cigar smoke will always spark a memory of Monsignor Lehman going from room to room passing out grade cards. You could always tell when Monsignor was getting closer to your classroom; the cigar smoke became stronger and stronger.

I can also remember going to class in the White House across from the school, it is now the Parish Meeting Center. In those days, you went all 12 years of school at Holy Angels on Water Street. Holy Angels High School (Lehman) was not built until the mid 50’s. I can still remember “Moving Day” from the small and over crowded elementary building to the big and new building so far out in the country.

My treasured memories of Holy Angels are many. They bring me joy.

My first memory is as a student. I am so grateful to the sisters who taught me. I am so grateful we went to Mass each day.

My second memory is as “Mom”. I am grateful to all the dedicated teachers who taught our six children all about Jesus.

My third memory is a s teacher. I so enjoy working in a Catholic school where I can share my love for Jesus, and my love for the Catholic Church.

I’ve told my own children and I tell the children I teach that we all want to get to heaven to be with Jesus. I am grateful to Holy Angels for helping us on our journey.

Holy Angels School

A great place to learn. Exceptional value based Catholic Education. I enjoyed my twelve years at Holy Angels. The teachers were ninety percent Sisters of Charity, they would take the time to help you if you had a problem you needed help with. They also set you up with values that would last you throughout you life.

My favorite memories during my years at Holy Angels were my Jr. High years during football season. Practice would always start at 4:00p.m. So I would stay after school with my best friend Darren Covault, we would walk to the Spot and get a Big Buy, French Fries and a Coke… every day. We would go back to school and hang out with Mr. Unrast and he would always talk about the U.D. Flyers Basketball team. He loved the Flyers. I also have a bunch of stories about Ms. Hertel; I’ll just say “She knew how to keep me in line”
